Yet another Green Genes

OK, so the SOMGG from the gallery sounds like it was recorded in an airplane hangar. Well, here is an alternate version, recorded at CJ Sparrow Pub, Cheshire, Connecticut as the featured artist at the famous Ken Safety Open Mike Show. Ken's open mic show puts all of the other open mics I have been to literally to SHAME. His house band really is fabulous, and he has a supernatural abilit to know when to coddle a freak, and when to move on. Well, he coddled the freaks in Soul Cryptographers a little and here is a version of Son of Mr. Green Genes that has a bit of a drunken mariachi feel to it. Make whatever inferences you want from that...

More Son of Mr. Green Genes

Soul Cryptographers is what grew out of the funk/soul/jazz outfit that played in lieu of DOOT! on the Kehler Liddel gallery gig that Steve Chillemi couldn't make it to. We liked the material and the way the band works together and formed a little side project. This is the lineup on the KSOMS recording, and Trombone Larry is the house trombonist at that open mic. He's a nice guy and can actually play a trombone! A real credit to the trombone fraternity, if you ask us.

Nate Trier, keys
Pete Brunelli, bass
Mike Paolucci, drums
Tim Kane, trumpet
Kenny Mack, saxamaphone
Trombone Larry, trombone

We play the Kehler Liddel Gallery again on November 8, 2007, minus Larry. We hope to play an actual paying bar gig at some point, but nobody is in any rush. Thanks for reading this far ;)

DOOT! Super Soul Spectacular

DOOT!, or a reasonable facsimile thereof, recently played a hourlong set of soul and jazz tunes. The material was entirely covers of bands like Medeski, Martin and Wood, Sugarman 3, Sun Ra, and yes... Frank Zappa. This recording was made on a MAudio Microtrack with the stock mic, and the location was pretty poor, so the quality is not fantastic, but you get the idea. Here is a little taste of that for ya.

Some Studio Stuff

OK, so maybe the term "studio" is misleading, depending on how you envision a band in the studio. Big control room, soundproof glass, monster console, giga-buck equipment, lavish tracking room, interns.... fuggadaboutit. Those days are still around, but mainly for bands with, ... how can we put this gently... A BUDGET. But that doesn't mean that we can't get across with just "decent" prosumer gear and a little peace and quiet. We have put out a new sampler CD for 2007 containing audio from our appearance at Zappanale 17, a gig at a small place called the Space in hamden, CT, and a few sessions that we recorded to multitrack digital. Keep an eye on the webpage for more info on the 2007 compilation CD, and here is a freebie.

This is the last track on the CD, and it runs over 10 minutes. No manipulation aside from trimming the "head and tail" and a few volume adjustments to compensate for the the overall mix. No, it doesn't sound like a Steely Dan record. Thanks for noticing. We are keeping it REAL!!!

Zappanale 17 - July 16, 2006

We were blown away to be invited to perform at Zappanale in Bad Doberan, Germany. 2006 was the 17th annual Zappanale, that international festival dedicated to all things Frank. Stephen and Peter had played there in 2005 as part of Doctor Dark, a Captain Beefheart trib band. We had a blast and somehow managed to get an invite based on a sampler of roughmixes that was assembled on-site from the contents of Pete's ipod! Gotta love technology, sometimes.

We opened the last day of the festival, where the anticipation for headliner Adrian Belew was in full swing by the time we got off stage. Thanks to the Zappateers for all of their support.

Andre Cholmondeley - guitar/synths

Filthy Hobbitz

Brass City Records - March 25, 2006

The friendly confines of Brass City Records in Waterbury, CT were the site of a second gig with Andre Cholnondeley, and featured the addition of keyboard whiz Nate Trier. This was a bit of a companion show to the Mattatuck Museum gig earlier in the month. Here's a clip from the mayhem that ensued.

Revenge of the Brass City Rollers

Mattatuck Museum - March 3, 2006

In early 2005 we playd a show at the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, CT. We invited Andre Cholmondeley of Project/Object to perform with us. We had a nice long set to get musically acquainted and we had a heck of a time.

Stephen Chillemi on drums/perc
Andre Cholmondeley on guitar/synths
Pete Brunelli on electric bass/synths.

We brought the whole sound system to this gig and had an enormous stage to fill up. Thanks to Andre for coming up to CT and playing a double set of spontaneous music with us.

Here is a clip of the show:

Up From The Basement

Here ya go. The initial DOOT! recording, Out Of The Basement, now available in its entirety for the debut of DOOT!Cast. We are including the whole thing in one installment so that you can sub or unsub as you please. Enjoy this x-ray look at the unbridled naivete that was the DOOT! experience in the depths of 2005. These tracks were recorded, like all DOOT! recordings, live to either stereo or multitrack. Aside from editing for length and maybe a few fader-moves, the material is meant to represent the feeling and energy and blemishes of the performance. This ethic continues throughout the material presented in this blogcast unless otherwise noted.

All Tracks: Stephen Chillemi - drums/perc; Pete Brunelli - electric bass

Enjoy!
